About Lugansk

Lugansk region - the Eastern Gate of Ukraine

The history of Lugansk began two centuries ago when in 1795 on the river Lugan, near a small village Kamennyy Brod began s construction of a gun factory. Around of the factory began to grow a settlement.

So, by Ekatherina's II decree on 14, November, 1795 was engendered Lugansk city. The first street of the city was English street. In this street in the family of the doctor was born the genius of Russian philology V.I. Dal who glorified by creation of a magnificent explanatory dictionary of Russian.

Today Lugansk is an administrative center of Lugansk region. It situated in the southeastern part of Ukraine with population of about 600 thousands people and huge industrial potential. There are 38 towns, including 14 major district towns; 23 smaller towns; 17 districts; 109 settlements, 792 villages.

Lugansk - is city of a science and students. There are universities, colleges, museums, theatres, philharmonic society, clubs, cinemas, a circus, and also a lot of parks, squares and every possible places for the rest and entertainments.

Life and activity of many outstanding political and public figures are connected to the city, representatives of a science, art and culture who have brought a huge contribution to a treasury of native Ukraine.
